Best Hotels Near Akita Station

JR Akita Station is where the Akita Shinkansen from Tokyo ends its line, and it also connects to Senshu Park, the site of the old Kubota Castle, within about a fifteen-minute walk. That makes the immediate station area Akita's most useful base regardless of why you're visiting: business travellers get a short commute to meetings, and sightseers get the castle grounds, the Akita Museum of Art and the Kawabata dining street all within reach on foot. Hotel Metropolitan Akita is directly connected to the station building itself, about as close as a hotel can get, while Richmond Hotel Akita Ekimae, APA Hotel Akita Senshu Koen, Dormy Inn Akita and ANA Crowne Plaza Akita fill in the streets within a ten-minute walk on either side. Between them they cover most budgets, from simple business rooms to a full-service IHG property with its own restaurants.

Convenient rather than characterful, built for arrivals and departures on a schedule.

…

Which side of the station to book

Distance from the platform is the whole point of this group, but a few extra minutes' walk can also put you closer to Senshu Park or the Kawabata restaurant street depending on which side of the station you land on.

Hotel Metropolitan Akita's direct connection to the station building is the closest any property in the city gets to a zero-minute walk, which matters most on a rainy day or when you're arriving with heavy luggage after a long Shinkansen ride. Richmond Hotel Akita Ekimae is a seven-minute walk out, close enough to keep the same convenience while landing a bit closer to the Akita Museum of Art side of Senshu Park. APA Hotel Akita Senshu Koen sits about fifteen minutes from the platform but only three minutes from the park itself, a useful trade if sightseeing matters more to you than the train connection.

ANA Crowne Plaza Akita, an IHG hotel, is three minutes from the concourse and also close to the Seibu department store, giving it the most full-service feel of the group with two restaurants, a bar and a fitness centre on site. Dormy Inn Akita sits opposite Senshu Park itself, an eight-minute walk from the platform, and adds a natural hot-spring public bath that none of the pure business properties in this group can match. Akita Castle Hotel, a seven-minute walk from the station, rounds out the group with four dining options and an on-site convenience store, useful for a stay that runs several days rather than a single overnight.

The practical difference between these hotels comes down to what you're doing before or after the train, not the room itself, since air conditioning, a private bathroom and free WiFi are standard across the group. If your day starts and ends at the Shinkansen platform, Hotel Metropolitan Akita or ANA Crowne Plaza Akita save the most walking time. If Senshu Park, Kubota Castle or the Akita Museum of Art are the priority, APA Hotel Akita Senshu Koen and Dormy Inn Akita put those a few minutes closer at the cost of a slightly longer walk back to the platform.

Booking this close to a Shinkansen terminus also means booking early during Akita's August Kanto Matsuri festival, when the lantern pole parade route runs near enough to some of these hotels that rooms sell out well ahead of the date. Outside festival season the area is calm rather than crowded, and the biggest advantage of staying here shows up on departure day, when a delayed train or an early meeting no longer means a stressful taxi ride across town. Winter adds another reason to favour this cluster: Akita's coastal snowfall can slow buses and taxis considerably, and a hotel within walking distance of the platform removes that risk from an already tight connection to the next leg of a Tohoku itinerary.

A traveller's take

I picked Hotel Metropolitan Akita for a trip where I was catching an early Komachi back to Tokyo and didn't want to think about timing a taxi in the snow, and being able to walk straight from the lobby to the platform made that easily the least stressful check-out I've had in Japan. On a later trip built around Senshu Park and the Akita Museum of Art I switched to APA Hotel Akita Senshu Koen instead, since the extra ten minutes to the station was a fair trade for being three minutes from the park gate.

Hotel Metropolitan Akita

Directly connected to the Shinkansen platform

Why guests love it

We stayed here specifically for the direct station connection during a trip with an early departure, and being able to walk from the lobby straight to the platform made checkout genuinely stress-free. Dining Manyo's local produce menu was a highlight one evening, and having laundry service available meant we could pack lighter for the rest of the trip. The rooms are comfortable rather than luxurious, but the location alone makes this an easy recommendation.

Richmond Hotel Akita Ekimae

Modern rooms seven minutes from the station and the museum

Why guests love it

We stayed here for a long weekend built around Senshu Park and the Akita Museum of Art, and the seven-minute walk to both made planning the days genuinely easy. Kagura's breakfast buffet was a highlight, with a good spread of local dishes rather than a generic hotel breakfast. The rooms felt more modern than the typical business hotel, and the whole stay felt comfortable without being overpriced.

Akita Castle Hotel

Four restaurants and shopping, five minutes from the castle grounds

Why guests love it

We stayed three nights and genuinely used three of the four restaurants on site, which made evenings easy without needing to plan ahead every day. Kurumaya's seasonal menu was a highlight, and having Senshu Park just five minutes away meant we could fit in a walk most mornings before breakfast. The convenience store downstairs came in handy more than once for late-night snacks.

Dormy Inn Akita

An open-air hot-spring bath right across from Senshu Park

Why guests love it

We stayed two nights specifically for the onsen bath, and having Senshu Park directly across the street made the evening soak feel like a real destination rather than a hotel amenity tacked on. The room itself is simple and functional, nothing special, but between the bath and the park-side location it was one of the better value stays we found in the city. The eight-minute walk to the station also made our departure day easy.

ANA Crowne Plaza Akita by IHG

Akita's most complete full-service hotel, steps from the station

Why guests love it

We stayed here for a work trip that also left room for sightseeing, and having a real fitness centre and a bar for evening drinks made it feel noticeably more full-service than the business hotels we'd tried elsewhere in Akita. The walk to Senshu Park and Kubota Castle was easy to fit in before dinner, and the international menu at the restaurant was a welcome change partway through the trip. It's a more expensive choice, but the extra facilities were worth it for us.

APA Hotel Akita Senshu Koen

Three minutes from Senshu Park, yukata robes included

Why guests love it

We booked this mainly for the location near Senshu Park and it delivered exactly that, with an easy three-minute walk to the castle grounds most mornings before the day's plans started. The room was basic but the yukata robes and the free movies were a nice, unexpected touch for the price. The coin-launderette came in handy partway through our trip, and the walk to Kawabata for dinner was manageable most evenings.

Route Inn Grantia Akita Spa Resort

Five hot-spring baths and a proper spa reset

Why guests love it

We booked two nights here purely for the spa facilities and it delivered more than expected, with five different baths meaning we never felt rushed or crowded. The relaxation room afterwards, with proper massage chairs rather than a bench, turned a bath into a genuine wellness afternoon. The restaurants on site meant we barely had to leave the property, and the walk into central Akita when we did was easy enough.

Local tips

  1. 1Book Hotel Metropolitan Akita or ANA Crowne Plaza Akita if your priority is minimising walking time to the Shinkansen platform
  2. 2Choose APA Hotel Akita Senshu Koen or Dormy Inn Akita if you'd rather be closer to Senshu Park and the Akita Museum of Art
  3. 3Reserve months ahead if your dates fall around the mid-August Kanto Matsuri, since the festival route runs close enough to push up demand across this whole group
  4. 4Ask for an upper floor at Hotel Metropolitan Akita if you want a view over the station rooftops rather than the platform side
  5. 5Use Dormy Inn Akita's public hot-spring bath as an evening reset after a full day of sightseeing rather than booking a separate onsen day trip
  6. 6Confirm check-in time if you're arriving on the last Shinkansen of the evening, since some smaller properties in this group keep a limited front-desk window
