About this stay

ANA Crowne Plaza Akita, an IHG Hotel, is three minutes' walk from JR Akita Train Station and offers the most complete full-service package in the city: two restaurants, a bar and a cafe, alongside a free fitness centre and massages available at a surcharge. Rooms are simply decorated with free WiFi and a flat-screen TV, carpeted with an en-suite bathroom, desk and refrigerator, and each includes an electric kettle with a green tea set, a hairdryer, free toiletries and slippers. International meals are served across the restaurants, a genuine point of difference from the more Japanese-focused dining at nearby hotels. The Seibu department store is a three-minute walk away, and both Senshu Park and Kubota Castle are ten minutes on foot, putting the city's central sights and its main shopping all within easy reach. Omoriyama Zoo is a twenty-minute drive for a longer day trip, and couples rate the location strongly at 9.1 for a two-person stay.

Our take

As the only true full-service international-chain hotel in central Akita, this is the obvious choice for travellers who want a fitness centre, a genuine bar and international dining options alongside the same three-minute walk to the station that the city's business hotels offer. It costs more than the surrounding chains, but the range of facilities justifies it for anyone who values that level of service.

  • Book the fitness centre into your daily schedule if maintaining a workout routine matters, since it's free and one of the few in the city
  • Try the international menu at one of the two restaurants for a change from the otherwise Japanese-heavy dining scene nearby
  • Walk the ten minutes to Senshu Park and Kubota Castle in the late afternoon for good light over the moat

Why we love it

  • Two restaurants, a bar and a cafe on site, the most complete dining line-up in the city
  • Free fitness centre, unusual among Akita's hotels
  • Three-minute walk to both the station and Seibu department store
  • Ten-minute walk to Senshu Park and Kubota Castle
Why guests love it

We stayed here for a work trip that also left room for sightseeing, and having a real fitness centre and a bar for evening drinks made it feel noticeably more full-service than the business hotels we'd tried elsewhere in Akita. The walk to Senshu Park and Kubota Castle was easy to fit in before dinner, and the international menu at the restaurant was a welcome change partway through the trip. It's a more expensive choice, but the extra facilities were worth it for us.
