Best Hotels Near Yokosuka Station Japan

Hotels near Yokosuka station come down to two addresses on the same stretch of waterfront. Mercure Yokosuka is a one-minute walk from Keikyu Shioiri Station, five minutes from the naval base gate and the Yokosuka Arts Theatre, and about ten minutes from JR Yokosuka Station. Hotel Harbour Yokosuka is six minutes on foot from that JR gate, a few steps from Keikyu Shioiri, and puts Kamakura twenty minutes away by JR and Haneda Airport an hour away on the Keikyu line. Both keep 24-hour front desks and free WiFi throughout, and neither needs a taxi at any hour.

The waterfront strip is the working heart of Yokosuka. Verny Park lines the JR side with roses and a view of the shipyard cranes, Dobuita Street runs a couple of blocks inland with sukajan jackets and navy burgers, and the streets behind Honcho keep standing bars and curry counters open late. Trains pass often enough that nobody consults a timetable. It is compact, loud in patches, and entirely walkable, which is the argument for staying beside the tracks rather than up the hill.

Where to stay in Yokosuka

Yokosuka has two station clusters within ten minutes of each other, which is rarer than it sounds and unusually convenient. Keikyu Shioiri handles the Shinagawa and Haneda traffic, JR Yokosuka handles Tokyo, Yokohama and Kamakura, and the walk between them runs along the harbour past Verny Park. Booking inside that triangle means Mikasa Park, Dobuita Street and the ferry pier are all reachable without a taxi, which matters in a city where the slopes start immediately behind the main street.

Mercure Yokosuka is the closest thing this city has to a platform-side hotel. Keikyu Shioiri Station is one minute away on foot, the Yokosuka Arts Theatre and the American naval base gate about five, and JR Yokosuka Station roughly ten, which makes it the safe pick for a first visit or a late train. Rooms are air-conditioned with floor-to-ceiling windows and neutral interiors, plus an LCD television with Japanese and international channels, a personal safe and a minibar. Reception runs 24 hours with safety deposit, dry cleaning and currency exchange, and drinks and snack vending machines cover the late return. In-room massage can be arranged.

Hotel Harbour Yokosuka trades a minute or two for character. It is a six-minute walk from JR Yokosuka Station, which connects to Kamakura in about twenty minutes, and a few steps from Keikyu Shioiri Station, which reaches Yokosuka Stadium in twenty minutes and Tokyo Skytree in ninety. Haneda Airport is roughly an hour away on the Keikyu Train Line. Rooms are compact and bright with an LCD television, a seating area and a small fridge, and the property lends out items such as a thermometer, a nail clipper or an air humidifier. Every floor keeps a service corner with a microwave and chairs.

The two differ most in how they handle the evening. Mercure Yokosuka puts its restaurant on the nineteenth floor over Yokosuka Bay, serving a Japanese and Western breakfast and an international lunch buffet, with bar Champs-Elysees on the ground floor for coffee, wine and cocktails. Hotel Harbour Yokosuka keeps a bright lobby lounge with free coffee and tea, a shelf of manga, a free-use cafe and a choice of shampoo brands, and serves a Western breakfast with fresh bread rolls at an additional charge. Neither has a communal bath, so the soak has to happen in the room.

A traveller's take

The test of a station hotel is the walk with a suitcase at the end of a long day, and both of these pass it. Out of the Shioiri ticket gate, Mercure is visible before the phone comes out. Hotel Harbour is the better bet for anyone arriving on JR from Kamakura, six minutes along the harbour with Verny Park on one side. The trade-off is that neither room is large, and the port never quite goes silent, so light sleepers should ask for a higher floor.

Local tips

  1. 1Take Mercure Yokosuka if you arrive on the Keikyu line, since Shioiri Station is a one-minute walk and the JR gate is only ten minutes further on foot.
  2. 2Book Hotel Harbour Yokosuka if your day trips run to Kamakura, which JR Yokosuka Station reaches in about twenty minutes from six minutes down the road.
  3. 3Use the free coffee and tea in the Hotel Harbour lobby lounge before heading out, and borrow the humidifier at reception if the dry season is biting.
  4. 4Eat breakfast on the nineteenth floor at Mercure Yokosuka for the bay view, then walk the Verny Park promenade towards Dobuita Street afterwards.
  5. 5Ask for a higher floor at either property. The waterfront is a working port, and the traffic on the harbour road carries into the lower rooms.
