Our take
Hotel GrandBach Sendai opened in 2021 in Rikuoka, about five minutes on foot from the East Exit of Sendai Station and four from Miyagino-dori on the Tozai subway line. The Bach in the name is literal: the guests-only lobby lounge on the 7th floor has a pipe organ, with live organ or piano at set times. A large shared bath on the top floor opens in the evening and again in the morning. Choose the room carefully: the 18 m² Double S has a shower booth only, the Double B adds a tub, and the twin reaches 23 m². With 9.0 from 2,982 reviews, I would book it for couples who want a quiet evening in the hotel; drivers should look elsewhere, as there is no parking.
- Book the Double B rather than the Double S if a bathtub matters to you: both are about 18 m², but only the B has a tub instead of a shower booth.
- Breakfast is a Japanese set built on Tohoku produce; if you prefer the Western salad plate or the hotel's curry, ask at least two days before.
- Coming off the Tohoku Shinkansen, use the East Exit: the hotel sits on the Rikuoka side, away from the shopping arcades west of the station.
- There is no guest parking at all, so travellers on a Tohoku road trip should drop the car before checking in or choose another base.
