  • 13 rooms, all with a bath fed by Kyoto Kiyomizu Onsen

  • All rooms non-smoking
  • Yasaka Shrine and Kodai-ji within walking distance
  • Japanese breakfast on advance request

Our take

Every one of the 13 rooms at Hotel Yuraku Kyo-yasaka has its own bath filled with water from Kyoto Kiyomizu Onsen, which makes it one of the few places in Higashiyama where a private onsen comes with the room rather than a booked slot. It sits in Washio-cho, within walking distance of Yasaka Shrine and Kodai-ji. The top rooms pair an open-air bath with a terrace and a small courtyard garden; Twin A covers 58.5 square metres including the terrace and sleeps three. Breakfast is Japanese, optional and booked ahead; no dinner is offered, so evenings mean Gion. A 9.7 from 516 reviews is exceptional. I would book it for couples; it is not a ryokan with kaiseki, and it should not be sold as one.

  • Pick a room with the open-air bath and terrace if the onsen is the reason you came; the semi-open-air rooms use a traditional slatted window instead of an outdoor tub.
  • Book the Japanese breakfast when you reserve the room, since it is prepared on advance request only, and plan dinner in Gion because the hotel serves none.
  • From Kyoto Station, the city bus to the Gion stop takes about 20 minutes, then around seven minutes on foot; with light bags, Keihan Gion-Shijo Station is about 15 minutes away.
  • Walking back through Gion at night, keep to the public streets: since April 2024 the private lanes off Hanamikoji are closed to visitors, with signs at their entrances.
  • Because the onsen bath is inside your own room, the tattoo rules that keep many travellers out of shared Kyoto baths simply do not come into play here.

Why we love it

  • The private open-air bath for ultimate relaxation
  • Comfortable family rooms with modern amenities
  • Attentive staff providing first-rate service
  • Convenient location near Gion Shijo Station
Why guests love it

Hotel Yuraku Kyo-yasaka stands out for one feature: a private open-air bath, which lets families bathe together without sharing a public onsen. Family rooms are air-conditioned with private bathrooms, bathrobes, a minibar and a TV, and free WiFi throughout. The lounge, coffee shop and terrace give parents a calm place for a drink while children rest, and massage services are on hand after a day of walking. Guests rate it 9.7 out of 10 across 516 reviews, an exceptional score in Kyoto.
