Our take
Higashiyama Shikikaboku is built for a quiet, refined Kyoto stay: an open-air bath, a sun terrace and garden, mountain-view rooms with a kitchenette, plus a lounge and concierge service. Rated 9.5, it is the retreat I would pick for couples who want calm between days of temple visits, with attractions such as Samurai Kembu Kyoto nearby. Travellers looking for nightlife on the doorstep will find it too peaceful.

- Utilise the concierge service to help plan your daily excursions and dining reservations.
- Take advantage of the sun terrace and garden for quiet moments of contemplation.

Why guests love itHigashiyama Shikikaboku is a five-star stay in Kyoto, rated 9.5, with a garden, a sun terrace and an open-air bath. Rooms have mountain views, air conditioning, a private bathroom and a kitchenette, handy for preparing snacks or a light meal for children. A lounge and concierge service help plan days around the city's temples. The mood is calm and refined, so I would choose it for a family with older children rather than toddlers.
