Our take
Kobe Bay Sheraton Hotel & Towers draws its own hot spring from about 1,600 metres below Rokko Island and runs it, unmixed, through Hamasen, the bath floor on the 3rd level with a large indoor bath, an open-air bath and a private bath. The water is a sodium chloride spring. The 270-room hotel is joined to Island Center Station on the Rokko Liner, so you never cross a road with luggage. The catch is distance: Rokko Island is a residential island, and Sannomiya is about 18 minutes away by city bus. An 8.6 from 401 reviews reflects that trade. I would book it for couples or families who want a real hot spring inside a city hotel and are happy to spend evenings there.
- Check the maintenance calendar before booking: Hamasen closes on one Tuesday in January, April, July and October, from midnight until 6 pm.
- If you have tattoos, plan on the private bath: the hotel publishes no tattoo policy for the shared baths, and the open-air bath cannot be reserved privately.
- For Sannomiya, the city bus from JR Sannomiya Station takes about 18 minutes; the Rokko Liner, which stops right at the hotel, links Rokko Island to the JR line at Sumiyoshi.
- Drivers have an indoor car park of about 180 spaces with a 2-metre height limit and no reservation needed, useful for a road trip to Arima or Himeji.
