About this stay

Via Inn Hakataguchi Ekimae opened in 2019 as the first Via Inn in Kyushu and stands on the Hakata Exit side of JR Hakata Station, the side that faces Kushida Shrine and Nakasu, not the Chikushi side where the Shinkansen platforms are. From the domestic terminal of Fukuoka Airport, the Kuko subway line reaches Hakata in two stops, and exit West 12a leaves you about three minutes from the door. The smallest of the 205 non-smoking rooms measure 13 m² with one double bed, and the twins have a bathtub separate from the shower. A smoking booth and an ice machine are on the second floor, where guests also find a coin laundry. Breakfast is served from 7:00 to 10:00 at Kyushu Megumi no Kozuchi on the ground floor. Check-in starts at 15:00 and check-out is by 10:00. The ten outdoor parking spaces must be reserved and take vehicles up to 2.1 m high. The desk lists no foreign-language service and takes Visa, Mastercard, JCB, American Express and UnionPay cards. Since April 2020, Fukuoka City has levied an accommodation tax for each guest and each night.

Our take

Via Inn Hakataguchi Ekimae opened in 2019 as the first Via Inn in Kyushu, a JR West group hotel of 205 rooms at 2-17-11 Hakata Ekimae, about three minutes on foot from the Hakata Exit of JR Hakata Station and from subway exit West 12a. Breakfast is served on the ground floor at Kyushu Megumi no Kozuchi from 7:00 to 10:00, last orders at 9:30. Rooms are non-smoking, with a smoking booth on the second floor, and the smallest measure 13 m² with one double bed. A child aged five or under may share an existing bed with a parent, one child per adult. I would book it for a short Fukuoka stop between Shinkansen legs or before a flight, knowing that the hotel lists no foreign-language support at the desk.

  • The Shinkansen platforms sit on the Chikushi side of Hakata Station, the opposite side from this hotel: after the Shinkansen gates, cross the concourse and follow signs for the Hakata Exit rather than leaving by the nearest door.
  • From the domestic terminal of Fukuoka Airport, the Kuko subway line reaches Hakata in two stops; climb out at exit West 12a and the hotel is about three minutes away.
  • The ten outdoor parking spaces must be booked in advance, take vehicles up to 2.1 m high and are usable from 15:00 to 10:00; when they are full, the hotel points you to car parks nearby.
  • During Hakata Gion Yamakasa, from 1 to 15 July, Kushida Shrine is within walking distance: the final Oiyama race starts there before dawn on the 15th, so the streets between Kushida Shrine and Gion are packed by then.

Why we love it

  • About three minutes on foot from the Hakata Exit, on the Kushida Shrine side of the station
  • Kushida Shrine within walking distance for the Hakata Gion Yamakasa in July
  • Twin rooms with a bathtub separate from the shower
  • Coin laundry on the second floor for long rail trips
Why guests love it

Via Inn Hakataguchi Ekimae is a station business hotel, and families should judge it as one. No room type offers an extra bed or a baby cot, and the smallest rooms measure 13 m² with one double bed: a parent and a toddler fit, a family of four does not. A child aged five or under may share an existing bed with a parent, one child per adult, but breakfast is not included for a child under 12 who shares a parent's bed. I would book two rooms, or a twin, the type with a bathtub separate from the shower, which makes bathing small children far easier. What works: the Hakata Exit is about three minutes away, the coin laundry on the second floor helps on a long rail trip, children's nightwear can be borrowed, and the Fukuoka Anpanman Children's Museum is two subway stops away at Nakasu-Kawabata, with a direct connection from the station. What does not: check-out is at 10:00, the desk lists no foreign-language service, and several guests find the entrance hard to spot when they first arrive.
