About this stay

市とコージ (Ichi to Koji) sits well outside central Akita, roughly thirty-two kilometres from JR Akita Station and thirty-five kilometres from Omoriyama Zoo, and offers something none of the city's business hotels do: genuine family-style tatami rooms with air conditioning, a private bathroom and free WiFi. Each room includes its own kitchenette and dining area, letting guests cook rather than rely on restaurants that are scarce this far from the city centre. A shared garden and lounge give the property a genuinely relaxed, minshuku-style feel, and a shared kitchen alongside daily housekeeping keeps the practical side covered without losing that homely atmosphere. Free on-site private parking and private check-in and check-out make clear this is a property designed around arriving by car and settling in for a proper stay rather than passing through. Guest reviews consistently rate it exceptionally highly, and mentions of walking tours and full-day security suggest a genuinely engaged host rather than a hands-off rental.

Our take

This is the property to book if a traditional tatami room and a slower, rural pace matter more to you than proximity to Akita's station and sights, and it rewards travellers who come with a car and a few nights to spare. It's not a base for hopping into the city each day, but as a genuine change of pace from a Japan trip built around business hotels and train platforms, it stands out.

  • Arrange your own transport before booking, since the roughly thirty-kilometre distance from the station rules out walking or casual taxis
  • Ask the host about a walking tour, since past guests specifically mention this as an option worth requesting
  • Plan to cook at least some meals using the kitchenette, since nearby restaurant options are limited this far from the city centre

Why we love it

  • Genuine tatami family rooms, rare within reach of Akita
  • Private kitchenette and dining area in every room
  • Shared garden and lounge for a relaxed, rural pace
  • Exceptionally high guest satisfaction ratings
Why guests love it

We came here specifically for a tatami room after a string of standard hotel stays elsewhere in Tohoku, and the garden and the host's warmth turned a stopover into one of the best parts of our trip. The kitchenette meant we cooked most nights, which suited the rural setting far better than searching for restaurants would have. It genuinely needs a car to reach, but for the tatami room and the pace of the place, it was worth the drive.
